About phone ring tones
In the beginning cell phones were for ringing not for phone ring tones, but nowadays phones have built-in games, backgrounds, switchable face plates and customizable cell phone ring tones.

Monophonic ring tones
Monophonic phone ring tones or just ring tones are short tunes played with simple tones. This is the standard or traditional single note cell phone ring tone format.

Polyphonic ring tones
The first polyphonic mobile was the Nokia 3510 (2002). A polyphonic ring tone is just like a regular cell phone ring tone, but it sounds more like music. Polyphonic ring tones can play many notes and sounds at the same time. With polyphonic ring tones you can talk about cell phone melodies! Some manufacturers use their own names for these musical ring tones. Motorola talks about MIDI ring tones and Sagem has their Hi-Fi ring tones. Motorola Base Tracks or groovetunes are special polyphonic ring tones which oneu can edit. Nokia also has their own special ring tones called Nokia True tones, which allows users to have special effects, songs, nature sounds and to alert them of an incoming call. MIDI ring tones
MIDI ring tones (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) enables the creation of polyphonic ring tones (musical compositions with differnet sounds). Polyphonic means that multiple tones can be played at the same time using instrument sounds such as guitar, drums, electronic piano, etc.

MP3 ring tones
The Beatniks audio technology can be integrated with MPEG codecs to play back MP3 files as ring tones. A clip from a real song on your cell phone is quite cool. The BAE technology is cell phone manufacturers such as Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson. The Nokia 7650 was one of the first cell phones to play BAE or MP3 ring tones.

Free ring tones
You can get free ring tones to your phone if you compose free ring tones of your own. If you have a phone with a built in ring tone composer you can also compose your own free ring tones.

True tones
True tones was launched by Nokia (2003). Many web sites also talk about True tones or Real tones when they refer to ring tones that can have extra sounds in them like singing or other strange sounds.

AMR (Adaptive Multi-rate Codec) files can be recorded using the phones built-in Recorder application. This way you can record yourself saying "Joe's calling" and assing the ring tone to "Joe".

Nokia composer ring tones
The Nokia 3210 was the first Nokia phone to use the composer ring tones. Composer ring tones are also used by other cell phone manufacturers. Composer phones have a built in ring tone composer and you can compose new ring tones directly on their keyboards.

Keypress ring tones
Keypress ring tones can be directly entered into your phone. Itīs much easier to compose ring tones with the key press format compared to the composer format (phones with ring tone composer). You do not need to understand the special symbols that appear on the composer screen as a result.

RTTTL ring tones
RTTTL stands for ring tone Text Transfer Language and it is a format for coding the notes of a ring tone in a universal format. With special ring tone convertor programs RTTTL ring tones can be converted to other ring tone formats and uploaded to your cell phone via datacable or a infrared connection.

WAV ring tones  On some cell phones like the Nokia 3650, 7650, 9210 and 9290 you can listen to any WAV file. WAV files can be downloaded or copied from PC and can contain anything - voice, music etc.

SMS ring tones
Nokia originally developed SMS to send short text messages between celularl phones. Cell phones also use this technic to receive and send non-text information like graphics and ring tones. An sms ring tone can be sent to the phone via sms.
